More About Capt. Thomas Vincent and His Militiamen
Excerpts from the 1796 Sullivan Co, TN Tax List.

Important! The more we have studied this list, the more clear it is that a significant number of the men on this list were residents of Washington Co TN as well as Sullivan Co TN. Some may also have resided in what was then and/or now Southwest (Washington > Russell > Lee > Scott Cos) VA; and/or Wilkes Co NC.

Capt. Thomas Vincent's 1788 Militia Pay Roll, Sullivan Co, (NC) TN

The following militia payroll is for Sullivan Co NC (TN), men serving under Capt. Thomas VINCENT in the Chicamauga Campaign of 1788 who were “entitled to compensation for equipping themselves with horses and provisions.”

nb: This list was in poor condition, and as a result it was very difficult, impossible in some instances, for the transcriber to decipher the script. Notations within brackets [ ] are those of the transcriber, and indicate probabilities as versus certainties.

More About Capt. Thomas Vincent and his Militiamen --
-- A Work in Progress --

The following are a few records and/or genealogical data in regard to the men who served under Capt. Thomas Vincent (and/or men who resided in the same area at the same time with the same name). Additions will be irregular, on a catch-as-catch-can basis; however, eventually we hope to add basic data for as many of the men as possible. Surnames common to the above men have been emphasized.

See Also the RW Pension File of John FIELDS, who, although not on the above militia list, adds significantly to the knowledge about the activities of this time and place and also includes additional Combs and Brashear material.

(Abstracted from RW Pension File R75415, Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, Virgil D. White, 1990, p. 2428) Note: Not yet known if the above Patrick MORRISON is same as appears on list; however, according to Morrison Researcher Elbert Johnson, email: ejohnson@dsdk12.net, sons of the RW Patrick MORRISON also included one by name of David MORRISON, a name also on the above list, as well as James, John and William; and a daughter by name of Betsey who married a Billy GOAD (See also William GOAD on 1796 Sullivan Co, TN tax list and William GOURD who, with James Combs and others, was tithed by George DAVIDSON on the 1768 Rowan Co NC Tax List of John BREVARD.

See also George MORRRISON of Sullivan Co TN who appears in the same 1812 Sullivan Co, TN Tax List District as Nicholas COMBS, and at whose home ca 1798, RW William CORNETT & Mary EVERAGE married. William and Mary EVERAGE Cornett later removed, as did Nicholas Combs, to Clay Co, KY where their daughter, Nancy, m 13 Dec 1819, Samuel COMBS, s/o Nicholas "8" & Nancy GRIGSBY Combs, thought to have been the same Nicholas as above. Their son, Robert B. CORNETT m in 1821 in Perry Co, KY (formed in 1820 from Clay and Floyd Cos) Louisa COMBS, d/o Elijah "8" & Sallie ROARK Combs, earlier of Hawkins Co, TN. It is not yet known if George MORRISON was kin to Patrick MORRISON; however, George's wife, Polly, appears to have been been the d/o Jonathan WOODS of Russell Co VA. Mary EVERAGE may have been the d/o Abner & Mary STACY Everage and gd/o Simon & Judith TOLSON Stacy (Pettit), with Judith TOLSON Stacy Pettit also residing in Sullivan Co TN at the time of the Cornett-Everage marriage. (See also Russell Co VA)

The John COMBS who appears on the 1788 Sullivan Co, Tennessee, Militia list may have been the son of William and Seth STACEY Combs, both born in Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co VA. William, son of Mason and Sarah Combs, Sr., lived in Frederick Co, VA, and then Rowan Co NC (later Surry Co, NC) by 1768. Seth STACEY was the daughter of Simon and Judith TOLSON Stacey (Pettit). (Combs-Stacy Researcher Barbara Stacy Mathews and see MORRISON above) Wm. COMBS' sister, Winnifred, married (1) William RIDGE, Sr., brother in law of John GOWEN (see below) and (2) Nathaniel ALLEN. John COMBS of 1788 was also possibly the same as, or close kin to, the following John COMBS:

(Greenville Co., S. C. DB A:213-214) Power of Attorney. Sept. 20, 1787. I, John COMBS of Washington Co., N. C. [now East TN], appoint my trusty and well beloved friend John MOLIN of Greenville Co., S. C., Gent., my true and lawful attorney, and in my name to sell, etc., a tract of land lying on Beaverdam Creek on the W. side of the N. fork of Saluda River, joining the lands of William GUDLOW, sd. land being surveyed by James SEABORN for sd. John Combs, containing 400 acres. Wit: Allen GOWEN, John GOWEN. /s/ John COMBS. Rec. Feb. 20, 1788 (Some South Carolina County Records, Vol. 2. Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., Editor)

Note: Allen GOWAN appears on the 1790 Greenville Co, SC Census, and it is the appearance of Allen and John GOWEN in the above record that may aid us in identifying John COMBS, as John GOWEN has been identified as the brother-in-law of William RIDGE, all of Surry Co, NC during the Revolutionary War - albeit in British Service apparently. (See Also George Baumbach's Tories of Surry Co NC). It appears, based on the above deed, that following a possibly precipitate departure from Surry Co, NC, that John COMBS may have detoured through Greenville, SC Carolina on his way to East TN. Note also Esli & Moses Hunt above in reference to Greenville District SC.

SIG: John CALLAHAM. Wit: Charles DUNCAN, John COMBS (Washington Co, TN Deeds 1775-1800, Loraine Rae Washington).

John CALLEHAM may have also been from Surry Co, NC; and Charles DUNCAN was the son of Marshall DUNCAN of Prince William Co, VA > Surry Co, NC. (See Combs-Duncan Families)

William SIMPSON (spelled SYMPSON) was my 4th gr. grandfather. According to pension records he enlisted first in Oct. 1781 in Sullivan Co. when it was still part of NC, under Capt. John LOONEY, and Col. Arthur CAMPBELL and served 3 mos. He served as a substitute for his father, Henry SYMPSON. He enlisted again for 3 mos in 1782 under Capt. Mose COURT (CAOIT) militia, commanded by Col. SHELBY. He then crossed the Santee River and joined Gen. MARION'S Army, where he served 3 1/2 mos. In 1783 he enlisted from Sullivan Co., now Tennessee for one month under Col. Thomas HUTCHENS. This time he was a substitute for John CLENDENNON (whom I think was the John CLENDENIN who married his sister, Mary SYMPSON, probably the same who is also on this list). In Sept. 1783 he was drafted again and served under Capt. Thomas VINCENT. He was born Oct 25, 1766 in PA. He married John CLENDENIN'S sister Mary (other branches of the family claim that her name was Rebecca, but my family has never said anything but Mary). In 1795 they moved to KY and in 1796 settled in Green Co., bordering Simpson Co. Land records show a Michael SYMPSON there at the same time-- I assume this is the Michal SIMPSON on the militia list and I think he may have been a brother. Would love to communicate with anyone who has any Sympson or Clendenin info! (Sarah Shaw Tatounova, sshaw@terminal.cz)

Adam Stoke aka Adam Stokes married Barbara WOLFF. He was born 1760-1764 and died abt 1830 Sullivan Co, TN He had at least 2 children born in Sullivan Co. His daughter Catherine was supposedly born at Piney Flats, Sullivan Co, TN 1794. Son Adam b. 1797 in Sullivan Co. Also listed on the 1796 Sullivan County Tax list below. (Nance nance188@yahoo.com)

James WALDROP may be the same later found in the records of Russell Co VA

Sullivan Co, TN, 1796 Tax List, Clerk's Copy

nb: 'Clerks' copy' indicates multiple lists, alphabetized by 1st letter of surname, have been merged, thus names appearing adjacent to each other were not necessarily in same tax district, but were more likely to be than if not adjacent to each other. Carriage returns between names indicates they were not listed adjacent to each other. When a name is followed by … this indicates the acreage and poll information was not abstracted.
